2 making a curved line between y the hed and tail: the iris of & the eye white, with a tincture Pe of yellow: the mouth mode- ae wide, and red within; the upper mandible hanging a little over the lower 5 both of them have a fingle row of fmall fharp teeth. ‘The fcales are rather large, of a blackifh brown colour; but as the bellies of moft Fifh are lighteft coloured, fo is the belly of this Fifh much lighter than the back. From the head, at fome diftance from the ridge of the back, runs parallel to it a narrow black curved line to the tail. It had fix fins, two under the gills, one on the middle of the back, ftrengthened with feve- ral ligulz or fharp-pointed bones; behind which, and joining to it, is another pliant even fin; one under the abdomen, and a fixth behind the anus. They are one of the moft numerous kinds of Fifh frequent- ing the Bahama iflands, and are efteemed very good meat.

It had five fins, one from the top of the back, reaching almoft to the tail, the fore part having fharp-pointed tones, the hind part more thin and pliant; two behind the gills, one under the ab- domen, and one behind the anus, guard- ed with a large pointed bone: all the fins were yellow, as was the tail, which was forked. ‘The Bahamians efteem this

HE figure fhews the ufual fize of thefe ifh: the eye large, with a light iris: the mouth fmall and without teeth; about the middle of the back was a {mall fin, and another near the tail: under the fore-part of the belly was a {mall fin, and another between the anus and the tail: the tail large and forked: the {cales of this Fifh were large, and of a fhining colour. They are efteemed good eating Fifh, and are caught in great quantities in particular parts of the Bahama Seas, at the times they go in fhoals to {pawn.

HE fize of thefe Plants is various, fome

growing to the heighth of three fect, though ufually a foot, and a foot and half: {preading into long, flender, pliant ftalks, of an horny, tranfpa- rent fubftance, of a light brown colour; but in- crufted over with a purple or reddifh coralline coat or bark. The horny part divefted of the coralline, burns, and ftinks like common horn. They grow in the fea, ufually in five, or ten,

and fifteen fathom water, and are frequently found

on the fhores of Virginia, Carolina, and fometimes on the Bahama Mlands. Thefe Plants do not grow horizontally, but upright as moft land-plants do, as doth alfo the great Sea-Fan; which is ufually thought to grow horizontally. This miftake, I conceive proceeds from the ftru€ture of that Plant, Judging it, from its flat and clofe conje@ure, not able to withftand the impetuofity of the waves, but in that pofition.

OSES was: the iris of the eye red, the upper mandible of a flefhy cal- lous fubftance, and of a reddifh purple colour; which was guarded by a bony fubftance as by a fhield; the upper part of which to the eye was black; from un- der the eye to the angle of the mouth it was purple, fprinkled thick over with crooked blue lines in form of wornis; the end of the upper mandible was armed with four large teeth, at the end of the under mandible were alfo two of the like fize; the reft of the teeth were fimall, and in fingle rows: the infide of the mouth was of a blood-red colour, thie under jaw yellow. From the eyes to the tail, the back was covered with large purple feales, thofe on the belly lighter, with ftains of yellow: on the back was a remarkable black fin, dividing at the bafis, and branching into four long pliant flagelli, large at the bafis, and gradually decreafing to their points, and bending backwards. Behind the gills were two yellow fins, and another imperfect one, or rather beard, under the throat. The tail of this Fifh being cut off before I had it, I cannot fay of what form it was.

ZTE form of this Fihh is fo odd and fingular, that without exhibiting his figure, it would be difficult to give Zan idea of it by words only. This yea was fomewhat lefs than two inches thick ; the head and whole body, exclufive of the fins and tail, form an oval figure ; from the hind-part of the tack and alfo from the belly, fhoot forth two large and very long tapering fins, of equal fize, ending in points; the half of thefe fins next the body are blue; the feft towards the points red: the tail of an orange colour; con- vex at the end. Two fmall fins grow behind the gills, one on each fide, of an orange colour, the bafis being black: under the abdomen grows another fmall fharp-pointed red fin, the fore-part of which is edged with blue: on the fore-part of the back grows three fharp-pointed bones ; under the hind-part of the belly are alfo three of the like fharp-pointed bones. The irides of the eyes yellow, with two ftreaks of blue, one crofling the upper, and the other the under part of the irides; the colour of the head yellow and dufky blue; the upper gill was armed with many pointed bones. Though the fhape of this Fifh is fingular, the moft remarkable parts of it are the fcales, which are of a dufky green colour, upon whieh large fcales are innumerable very {mall ones. Thefe Fith are taken on the coafts of Carolina; but on the coafts of the Bahama Mlands

and large feales deeply verged with gold. coat of {mall fcales over the large ones, is a fin- gularity, I believe, peculiar to this Fifth. They are efteemed in Carolina an excellent eating Fith, and at the Bahama Iflands inferior to none they have,

Quoi gue forme de ce poiffon foit fr nguliere, il wa rien de a remarquable que fes grandes écailles, qui font dun verd brun, & fur lefquelles il y en a une infinite dé tres petites. On prend ces Poiffons fur les cotes de la Caroline; mais on trouve des poiffons de la mémeé forme Jur les cétes des iles Bahama, avec de grandes & de petites écailles qui ont un large bord doré. Fe croi que cette couche de petites écailles par deffus les grandes eft une fingularité, qui ne fe trouve que dans ce Poiffon. Il paffe a la Caroline pour um tres ex- cellent manger; &} aux iles Bahama i ne le cede en bonté a aucun autre.

The Loggerhead Turtle.

SWEETS HE head of this Turtle 1s eo 2 bigger in proportion, and has

ya fiercer afpect than the other “t& kinds; its legs are alfo fhorter: the upper fhell is broader in the middle and narrower at the hind-part than others. They are the boldett, moft voracious, and fouleft feeders, of all the Turtle: their flefh is rank, therefore they are little fought after, which occafions them to be more numerous than any of the other

kinds.

They range the ocean over; an inftance of which (amongft many that J have known) happened the 20" of 4pri/, 1725, in the la- titude of 30 degrees north; when our boat was hoilted out, and a Loggerhead-Turtle ftruck as it was fleeping on the furface of the water : this by our reckoning appeared to be midway between the Azores and the Bahama Iflands, either of which places being the neareft land it could come from, or that they are known to frequent ; there being none on the north continent of America, farther north than cape Florida. It being amphibious, and yet at fo great a diftance from land in breeding-time, makes it, the more remarkable. They feed moftly on fhell-fith ; the great ftrength and hardnefs of their beaks enabling them to break very large fhells, particularly the Buccinum, men- tioned above, in p. 134, pieces of which I have taken out of their ftomachs; and have feen fraGtures upon large fhells, which the turtlers told me were caufed by the bite of thefe Turtles.

A trente dégrés de la- titude au Nord, on mit dehors nétre cha- loupe 5 &P on harponna une de ces Tortues, gui dormoit fur la furface de la Mer : cet endrott étoit, [elon notre efiime, a moitié chemin des Azores aux iles Bahama, ces ies étant les terres les plus proches d’ou elle put venir, ou qu'on fache que ces Tortues frequentent 5 car il ny en a aucune dans le continent Sep- tentrional de ’ Amérique, plus avant vers le Nord, que le cap de Floride. The Trunk-Turtle. Never faw one of thefe Turtles; they are not common, being but rarely taken. 1 was told they grow to a ver large fize, of a narrow form, but very deep; the upper fhell being more convex than in the other kinds of Turtle. Their flefh is rank, -but affords a large quantity of oil, which is all it is valued for. In the repofitory of the Royal Society, is a Turtle preferved intire, which I take to be of this fpecies.

Le deffus de la tite & du dos de ce Serpent étoit brun, avec plufic eurs grandes taches noires, placeés avec fimétrie : Pextremité poftéricure avoit des rayes jaunes tranfoerfales entre les taches noires : le ventre étoit dun blanc fale, avec des taches notres plus petites.

They are generally faid to be harmlefs : they appear earlier in the fpring than any other Serpent, and are numerous in the fandy woods of Virginia and Carolina.
